Corolla Altis overview

The Corolla Altis is Toyota's compact sedan, one size up from the Ativ and the Vios. The current car is the twelfth-generation Corolla (E210), and the Philippine lineup now leans toward hybrids. Only the entry 1.8 E CVT, at ₱1,213,000, keeps a plain gasoline engine. The 1.8 E HEV (₱1,489,000), 1.8 G HEV (₱1,602,000) and 1.8 GR-S Hybrid (₱1,746,000) all use Toyota's 1.8-liter hybrid system. It is the sedan for buyers who find the Ativ too small but do not want a crossover.

On paper the gas car has the bigger numbers: 138 hp and 172 Nm, against 120 hp and 142 Nm for the hybrid's engine before the electric motor joins in. In heavy traffic the motor matters more than peak output, so the hybrid is the version for people who spend hours on EDSA or C5 every week. The sedan is about 4,630 mm long on a 2,700 mm wheelbase and sits low: the spec sheet lists 128 mm of ground clearance for the gas car and 149 mm for the hybrid G. The gas version has a 50-liter tank, the hybrid 43 liters.

Before you sign, compare the Altis E HEV with the Corolla Cross G HEV. They use the same 1.8 hybrid, the Cross costs only ₱25,000 more, and it gives you 180 mm of ground clearance, which counts for a lot in flood-prone barangays. Pick the Altis if you want a sedan's lower seating position and a separate trunk. Pick the gas 1.8 E if you drive little and mostly on open roads, where a hybrid's savings shrink. As with any hybrid, get the battery coverage terms in writing.

Who it is for: Professionals and small families who want a hybrid sedan with more room than the Ativ and do not need crossover ground clearance.

Pros and cons

  • Gas 1.8 E CVT is a cheaper way into a compact sedan

What to consider

  • Low 128–149 mm ground clearance for flooded streets
  • The taller Corolla Cross hybrid costs only ₱25,000 more than the Altis E HEV

Toyota Corolla Altis FAQ

Is the Corolla Altis hybrid worth it over the gas version?

The 1.8 E HEV costs ₱276,000 more than the gas 1.8 E CVT. You get lower fuel use in traffic and, with a green plate, exemption from number coding. If you drive little or mostly on open roads, the gas car is easier to justify.

How much is the Corolla Altis GR-S?

The 1.8 GR-S Hybrid CVT is listed at ₱1,746,000, or ₱1,771,000 in Platinum White Pearl Mica.

Does the Corolla Altis have enough ground clearance for Philippine roads?

It is a low sedan: 128 mm for the gas version and 149 mm for the hybrid G, according to the spec sheet. That is fine on paved roads, but take steep driveways, humps and flooded streets with care.
