Kona Hybrid overview
The Kona returned to the Philippines in mid-2025, this time as a hybrid only. HMPH's October 2026 price list has two trims: the 1.6 HEV GLS 6DCT at ₱1,528,000 and the 1.6 HEV Premium 6DCT at ₱1,688,000. Both pair a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. Top Gear Philippines puts output at about 139 hp, and the car is 4,350 mm long.
Unlike Honda's e:HEV, Hyundai's system is a parallel hybrid. The engine and motor can both drive the wheels through a real gearbox, so it feels closer to a regular automatic car on the highway. In traffic the motor handles crawling and light acceleration, which is where hybrids save the most fuel. The DOE reads the EVIDA law as exempting full hybrids like the Kona from number coding. For someone who drives into Makati or BGC every weekday, that alone can be worth a lot.
The price puts it against the Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid and Corolla Cross Hybrid, Honda's HR-V RS e:HEV and the Nissan Kicks e-Power. The GLS undercuts the HR-V hybrid by about ₱270,000, which is a big gap for similar technology. The Kona's styling also stands out more than most in the class. On the minus side, HMPH's website gives little in the way of detailed specs, so ask the dealer for the brochure, including ground clearance, fuel tank size and the airbag count of each trim. Dual-clutch gearboxes can feel less smooth at a crawl than a CVT, so test-drive it in heavy traffic before deciding.
Who it is for: Commuters who want a hybrid crossover that's exempt from number coding for less than Honda's HR-V hybrid.
