Sealion 5 DM-i overview

The Sealion 5 DM-i is BYD's entry plug-in hybrid SUV, sold as one variant at ₱1,268,000. It sits ₱330,000 below the Sealion 6 DM-i and uses a 1.5-liter engine that mostly works as a generator, a 197 PS (194 hp), 300 Nm front motor and a 12.96 kWh Blade Battery. BYD quotes 71 km of electric range on the NEDC cycle, 1,001 km combined and 0 to 100 km/h in 8.3 seconds. Curb weight is 1,675 kg.

It is a proper compact SUV in size: 4,738 mm long, with 156 mm of ground clearance and a 520-liter trunk that grows to 1,339 liters with the rear seats folded. It rides on 18-inch wheels with 225/60 tires and has a multi-link rear suspension. The 5.8-meter turning radius is wider than the Atto 3's, which is worth remembering in tight mall parking. Front brakes are ventilated discs and the rears solid discs.

Against the Sealion 6 DM-i, the Sealion 5 gives up battery capacity (12.96 kWh versus 18.3 kWh) and ground clearance (156 mm versus 173 mm) but saves ₱330,000. Against gasoline compact SUVs, it can do most weekday commuting on electricity charged at home. Geely's EX5 EM-i Pro at ₱1,288,000 is its closest price rival and has a bigger 18.4 kWh battery, so compare the two carefully, including warranty and dealer coverage near you. Like other plug-in hybrids, it should be exempt from number coding under EVIDA. If you plan to drive mostly on electricity, set up a dedicated home outlet or wall charger. BYD's battery warranty runs 8 years or 160,000 km.

Who it is for: Families who want a compact plug-in hybrid SUV and want to keep the budget under ₱1.3 million.
