Atto 2 DM-i overview

The Atto 2 DM-i is the plug-in hybrid version of BYD's small crossover and, at ₱1,048,000 for the Dynamic, one of the cheapest ways into a new electrified crossover in the Philippines. The Premium costs ₱1,258,000. Both use BYD's Super DM-i system, with a 165 PS (163 hp), 300 Nm electric motor driving the front wheels, a 7.9 kWh Blade Battery and a gasoline engine that works mainly as a generator. Curb weight is 1,510 kg for both, and both seat five.

The battery is small, so electric-only range is just 45 km, but BYD quotes a combined range of 1,045 km and 0 to 100 km/h in 9.1 seconds. In daily use that means short city trips can run on electricity after an overnight charge, while longer drives use gasoline with no range worries and no hunting for chargers. The body is 4,330 mm long with 150 mm of ground clearance and up to 1,335 liters of cargo space.

The ₱210,000 gap between Dynamic and Premium buys 17-inch wheels with 215/60 tires, among other equipment. The Dynamic runs on 16-inch wheels with taller 215/65 tires, which should ride a bit softer on bad roads and cost less to replace. Rivals include the Geely Coolray and Toyota Yaris Cross, plus BYD's own Seal 5 DM-i sedan for buyers who don't need the crossover shape. As a plug-in hybrid, it should qualify for the EVIDA number coding exemption. With a battery this small, a full charge at home should not take long, so plugging in every night is easy to build into a routine.

Who it is for: Budget-minded families who want to drive on electricity around town without worrying about chargers on long trips.
