Gear – It is a rotating machine part with cut teeth, or cogs, this mesh with another toothed part with the purpose to transmit torque.
Gear Ratio – The number of revolutions a driving (pinion) gear requires to turn a driven (ring) gear through one complete revolution.
For a pair of gears, the ratio is found by diving the number of teeth on the driven gear by the number of teeth on the driving pinion gear.
